The department delivers a stimulating and fun curriculum which prepares its pupils for independent living. It aims to foster a love of books and story and to encourage its pupils to explore the awe and wonder of literature and/or to use text for information purposes. The work covered ranges from the teaching of phonics through to experiences of war poetry and the study of Shakespeare. This culminates in pupils being entered for the AQA Entry Level Certificate or the Unit Award Scheme. We also provide a literacy support programme across the school. We use a range of teaching and learning styles which attempt to cater for different types of learners thus enabling every pupil to access the curriculum. Role play and drama are used to enhance real life situations. Creative writing and poetry are additional strengths of the department with many pupils having had poetry published in the 'Suffolk Writers' poetry anthologies.

The Iron Man
These pictures were drawn by pupils in year 7 whilst studying ‘The Iron Man’. They were drawn in response to a description read from the book.
Guided Writing
This work was carried out with a low-level ability year 9 class. It was part of a unit about writing newspaper stories. The class had done oral work based on the photograph and a planning sheet containing key words before this piece of guided writing was produced. It was copied from the white board. This piece of work was done by a student who has great difficulty with handwriting.
