At Beacon Hill our pupils study the science national curriculum.
In years 3-6 our pupils study units from the key stage 2 syllabus for science.
In years 7 and 8 our pupils study units from the key stage 3 syllabus for science.
In Year 9, 10 and 11 they study OCR Entry Level Science.
Our entry level covers the 3 sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) with an emphasis on practical work and applications of science. Pupils can gain either a Bronze (Level 1 award), Silver (level 2 award) or Gold (level 3 award) in science.
Although we are a small school we have our own science laboratory where pupils carry out experiments using equipment such as Bunsen burners. We also have a preparation room full of science equipment such as microscopes for use in or out of the laboratory.
Key Stage 3 - Recent Work
Class 6 - Autumn 2006 and Spring 2007
In class 6 we have enjoyed learning about habitats and the ways that creatures and plants are suited to their environment. We visited Foxburrow Farm and looked at forest, meadow and pond habitats. We especially loved hugging the trees to find out how old they are and pond dipping.
We have been looking at how to measure temperature using a thermometer. Class 6 also thermally insulated a cup using plastic bags, newspaper or bubble wrap, to keep a drink hotter for longer.
YEAR 9 - Endothermic Reactions 2008
Looking at how much heat is given out, when Calcium reacts with water.
Year 7 - Ph testing - 2008
Testing different soils to see whether the soil is acidic or alkali, using indicator liquid to see what colour the filtered water turns to.

SCIENCE SHOW
In February we had a visit from Steve Allman from show me learning, showing us different experiments using forces(grvity, friction and air pressure).
