The P.S.H.E. curriculum is based on the Government’s ‘Every Child Matters’ Strategy, this is made up of the following five aims: Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution and Achieve Economic Well-Being. At Beacon Hill this is taught through a very active approach including visits out into the community and visitors to the school. Activities are differentiated and the focus is on making the learning relevant to the child’s needs and understanding for example through art work, discussion, role play and games. Topics are designed and programmed to link with other curriculum areas and reinforce learning.
Citizenship is taught in a similar way to P.S.H.E. and is linked very closely to current and topical issues. It aims to help pupils to become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens, through promoting spiritual, moral, social and cultural development making them self-confident and responsible both in and beyond the classroom. It encourages pupils to play an active and helpful part in the life of their school, neighbourhood, community and the wider world. It gives them some understanding of our economy, democratic institutions and values and encourages respect for the diverse nature of our society and the world in general. This includes; charity fundraising, democratic elections in school as well as raising the awareness of our part in the global village by becoming actively involved in topical issues.
In the early years, key stages one two and three pupils receive one lesson a week of P.S.H.E. and Citizenship supported by daily sessions of ‘Time for Me’ which concentrates on the individual’s development. In key stage four these are delivered through the Life Skills programme and ‘Time for Me’. In addition to this there is a Citizenship Week once a year where the whole curriculum focuses on specific issues.
